The Story Begins
Originally built as a private school in 1851, Hamilton Hotel was opened in the early 1860s by the hotelier Admiral Horatio Bridge. Named in honor of Eliza Hamilton Holly, a family friend and daughter of Alexander Hamilton, the hotel quickly became known not only for "the sophistication of its residents," but also as "the scene of much political gossip."

Completed in 1922, the stunningly elegant new hotel offered a luxurious experience at a reasonable price, quickly becoming a hub of social life and commerce, hosting everyone from musicians and entertainers to labor leaders and presidents.
